| | | Expert advice on Kathi's makeover | | Posted Monday, January 08, 2007 2:59:58 PM by Blog57 Team | | PJ Ciraulo, owner and stylist, Loft A2 Salon, San Jose. Before: "Her hair looked brassy and brought out the pink in her skin. It's monochromatic, without much visual texture." The color: "I gave her semi-permanent light colors, with a few low lights underneath, to sustain her natural blond but bring out a darker color underneath. I didn't want to go too dark, so it wouldn't leave her with a hard line of outgrowth in a few weeks." The cut: "We want to frame her face with soft layers and get rid of the triangle. More height toward the top and less bulk on the bottom slims the face." After: "Just because you're at a certain maturity level doesn't mean you have to cut off your hair! She has a natural wave -- I wanted to do something that will work if she doesn't do too much.... | |

| | | How to prevent, treat head lice | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 1:00:13 PM by Blog57 Team | | ATLANTA - Head lice are just plain icky, a not-so-scientific way to explain how the tiny critters suck tiny amounts of blood from the scalps of victims before laying eggs, commonly known as nits. If there's any good news to report, it's that lice don't transmit germs. If your child has been exposed to head lice, check his or her scalp for lice every few days. Also, check the scalps of other family members. To treat head lice If you spot lice on your child's scalp, keep him or her home from school.... | |

| | | Tech Talk: Consoles appeal to all gamers, but decision is personal choice | | Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 7:18:39 AM by Blog57 Team | | The latest game consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo appeal to distinctly different parts of my personality. Nintendo's Wii is perfect for the family guy in me. Microsoft's Xbox 360 fits my hard-core shooting side. Sony's PlayStation 3 appeals in that way, too, but it also brings out the kid in me who wants to be the first on the block to own the coolest new toy. My favorite console depends on what I feel like playing on any given day. These consoles have something for every gamer. And this season, each console has a must-have game. When I'm with the family, I don't mind watching games on a standard TV with cartoon-like images. The fun of the Wii is its social interaction. It sets up hilarious situations, as when even the tiniest of kids realizes the cause and effect between swinging the motion-sensing controller and making something happen on the screen.... | |

| | | The metals, movement and sound of Harry Bertoia | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 6:57:26 PM by Blog57 Team | | Harry Bertoia lived to magnify nature's beauty. The Berks County sculptor transformed dandelions into satellite trees of stainless steel and reeds into chiming rods of beryllium copper. He considered his Barto barn more than a concert hall for his sound sculptures; to him it was nothing less than a cosmic instrument. This symbiotic relationship stamps ''In Nature's Embrace,'' a Bertoia retrospective at the Reading Public Museum. .... | |

| | | The Light Touch -- Earth Angel | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 1:13:37 PM by Blog57 Team | | When I was a young and impressionable adolescent I had a crush on the town heartthrob, Sam Emory. Every other girl liked Sam too which made the competition fierce. What made me the most fortunate of the lot was that I had easy access to Sam. My mother liked shopping at Emory's Department Store where Sam hung out on weekends, walking the floors and smiling at every customer who stopped by. The entire Emory family was equally attractive. Susan, the daughter, was pretty and smart. Helene, the mother, statuesque and gracious and George Emory, the pillar of the community and king of his domain, made Emory's the best shopping emporium in town. Emory's carried everything: men, women and children's clothing, accessories, shoes, makeup, bags and belts, and expensive lingerie. Emory's was a microcosm of a New York department store without the commute and where, if I were lucky, I would catch a glimpse of Sam.... | |
