| `I'm more of a vintage kind of guy.' | | Posted Sunday, January 21, 2007 1:00:47 PM by Blog57 Team | | I'm more of a vintage kind of guy. I'm that kind of person that can go in the thrift store and find my stuff whereas other people can't because they think (thrift stores) don't have quality. But you make the quality. It's the person that makes the clothes, not the clothes that make the person. ... Plus, they fit perfectly." In addition to all vintage, all the time, Monroe has another trademark: mismatched socks. "When I get up in the morning, I just pull out two socks. If they match, they match. If they don't, they don't, because I'm standing up all day anyway," he said as he curled a client's hair. What thrift stores do you like to hit? America's Thrift Stores, Goodwill and Salvation Army. So we'll never catch you buying a Polo shirt in Parisian? "No, because if I go to the mall, people are always stopping me, asking me about hair." Describe your style in three words.... | |

| | | JetBlue debut: No big deal-- just a good one | | Posted Sunday, January 14, 2007 3:08:10 PM by Blog57 Team | | Uneventful. That's just about the highest praise anyone can lavish on a commercial flight between two major cities. This one was uneventful despite its being a Very Big Deal. JetBlue, darling of the East Coast budget traveler, just inaugurated service between Chicago's O'Hare and New York's JFK. That would be Flight 904 at 9:25 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, just to give it its proper weight. Also taking off on JetBlue that day: regular flights from Chicago to Long Beach, Calif.--or LAX Lite. Oh, the JetBlue people did ramp up a lot of excitement, but fortunately they kept it confined to ground level at Gate E8, O'Hare Terminal 2. Blue and white balloons (official JetBlue colors) framed the check-in counter. TV crews and newspaper photogs crowded around Mayor Richard M.... | |

As the holiday shopping season ramps up in the weeks ahead, local retailers are offering a wide variety of tips for holiday shoppers. Electronics With much anticipation, Sony Play Station 3 and Nintendo Wii make their debuts this week Play Station 3 arrives in stores Friday and Nintendo Wii will be in stores Nov. 19. Retailers feel they wont be able to keep the game systems stocked on the shelves, and it will be a mad rush for those game enthusiasts to make their claim on these systems. In fact, retailers were literally knocked down when Play Station 2 made its debut in the Fall of 2000. According to Chris Warner, the store manager for Best Buy, the new feature on Play Station 3 is that people will be able to store the games on the system itself.... | |

| | | In living color | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 3:10:40 AM by Blog57 Team | | SWEEP IT UP OR LEAVE IT down. Cut, curl, straighten and color it. Hair has become a canvas of sorts, reflecting your moods or helping you make statements. Your hair can even be the starting point of your fashion fantasies. Use it as the foundation for a totally new look or allow it to recharge and accent your current style. A change in color, whether in your wardrobe or your hairstyle, can add zing to and redirect your fashion energies. Once called a womans richest ornament, hair still plays a huge role in personal perception and presentation. Since hairs entry into unofficial accessory status, styling aids, hair-care products and treatments have sprung up to solve practically any emergency. All this attention revives the hairs somewhat outdated yet still fitting designation as our crowning glory.... | |

| | | S. African leader: 'Color is insignificant' | | Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 3:03:08 PM by Blog57 Team | | When Eddie Daniels is questioned about his race, he says he is multicolored. His hair, skin, lips and teeth are all different colors. "Color is insignificant," Daniels said. "Color doesn't reflect integrity." Daniels, an anti-apartheid leader, shared the importance of being color blind Monday at Marist College. His visit was part of the college's international lecture series. As a young person growing up in Capetown, South Africa, Daniels said he became angered at injustices in his community caused by gangs and government. When suffering and government oppression became worse, Daniels was among a group who founded the African Resistance Movement. Focusing on economic targets, they used explosives to bring factories and trains to a halt. After being arrested and charged with sabotage a few years later, he was sent to Robben Island prison from 1964-1979.... | |

| | | Showing your true colors | | Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 3:12:14 AM by Blog57 Team | | Every few weeks, Kristie Billings dons her old, battered Culture Club T-shirt, throws on some music and dyes her hair pink. Or purple. Or red. Whatever strikes her fancy. "I was so into Boy George and Cyndi Lauper as a kid that I begged my mom to let me dye my hair," the 32-year-old Deer Isle native recalled. "I was 10 at the time, so she definitely said no. But then when I was 12 she finally let me do it, and I went to a salon and had it dyed fire engine red." Twenty years later, Billings' hair is a vibrant fuchsia. At least it was last week. Her hair color is so striking, you can easily spot her from a block away as she goes for coffee and on other errands from her shoe store, Shoegazer, at the intersection of Main and Water streets in downtown Ellsworth. Billings likes changing her hair color so much, in fact, she's been doing it herself for nearly two decades.... | |

| | | John Rolfe: Old ghouls are golden | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 6:58:30 PM by Blog57 Team | | Leaves are falling like Cujo's save percentage and the air is growing colder thanthe Arizona Cardinals. All Hallows Eveis here and ghouls continue to stalk the landscape, often by night, long after their departure fromthemain stage. Some have beenreduced to a degree ofcartoonish malevolence by their sheer familiarity, yet this does not kill their ability to peddle their persona. Thisis certainly the case with a classic creature likeDennis "Worm" Rodman, who terrorized the NBA for13 years as a Frankenstein monster cobbled together from hunks of ballhawk fury, emotional turmoil, hair dye, eather, makeup and ladies garments -- his wedding gown instantly transforming him into his own sequel: the Bride of Frankenstein. Rodman's 2005account of his tumultuous, demon alcohol-soakedpost-NBA lifewas aptly entitled I Should Be Dead By Now.... | |

| | | Female on the trail | | Posted Thursday, October 26, 2006 6:56:53 PM by Blog57 Team | | OGDEN -- Hair and nails freshly done, dolled up with make up and glittering with jewelry, Cherie Rhodes stepped out of the car near a Mesquite, Nev., casino dressed to kill. A few days later, she did -- shooting a 200-pound wild boar on a guided hunt purchased at a fundraiser for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Rhodes, a 20-year hunting veteran, admits her fresh-out-of-the-salon look sometimes forces her to earn the respect of fellow hunters. "The guys were like, 'Oh yeah, uh huh.' But I got down in the dirt and did everything I needed to do," Rhodes said. Now, she's got the head of a 200-pound boar mounted on her wall, and a photograph to prove she shot it. Rhodes, now a chairwoman for the Golden Spike chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, is one of a growing number of women thriving in the male-dominated world of big game hunting.... | |
