City barber shop among last of dying breed

COLUMBUS - The old fashioned barber shop is becoming something of a scarcity throughout the country, but Gene's Barber Shop in downtown Columbus continues the tradition of inexpensive cuts in a masculine atmosphere. The shop waiting area is not cluttered by curling irons, wash basins, product displays or dryers. Gene Arnold, owner of Gene's Barber Shop, wouldn't use those things. He does not do shaves, colorings or styling, using only a pair of scissors, shears and a suction hose to remove hair.“I do hair cuts, period," Arnold said. He throws in conversations for free, which are interrupted only by the noise of the hair vacuum. “We talk about a variety of everything. Everyone has an opinion on something, and it is always fun to argue about something."His clients range in age from 1 to 95, and all but one are male....

No showstoppers, but lots of curves on red carpet

In a smokin' yellow cocktail-length dress, with her blond hair in a long, straightened cut, newly separated Reese Witherspoon seemed to be saying, "Eat your heart out, Ryan." Her husband, Ryan Phillipe, wasn't in the audience, but we bet word got back to him fast. Cameron Diaz had a tougher job. Her ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, was at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles for the show. We're not sure she got her point across; she looked more princesslike than "sexyback" in a belted white tulle gown held up with a single shoulder strap. Jennifer Lopez, on the arm of hubby Marc Anthony, looked spectacular in a Marchesa off-the-shoulder black gown trimmed in gold. Lopez's one-time paramour, Ben Affleck, arrived with his wife, Jennifer Garner, who looked noticeably less glamorous in a white V-neck gown and mussed hair....

Meet bob

Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Sienna Miller, Victoria Beckham. What do they have in common these days? They have all ditched their "beach hair" for shorter, sleeker bobs. In the fashion mags and on the streets of Chicago, the sleek, shorter bob is back in a big way for fall and winter, reinvented with irregular ends. Spears wowed the audience with her chic new blond bob when she dropped by David Letterman's show last Monday night. Beckham, formerly Posh Spice, explained on British morning TV that she got rid of her hair extensions because she'd lose clumps of hair "in the heat of passion." Her A-line bob, which has a dramatic, neck-revealing edge, was an instant hit. Gossip sites named Beckham's haircut a "Pob" to describe the funky twist on the classic bob. "It looks like the edges are sort of broken," said Chris Yoshimura of Siren Salon, 3143 N....

Cal's new-look Wilkes has hair-raising power

BERKELEY ? The first difference you notice is the hair. Jordan Wilkes hasn't cut it since Cal lost to North Carolina State in the first round of last season's NCAA tournament, and it's given him quite a mop. But Wilkes' most important new look this season is in the width. The sophomore has added 15 pounds to his lean frame, and he looks more prepared to handle the wars inside the paint. "I was posting up against him the other day, and I kind of got a shove that I've never got before from him," Cal center DeVon Hardin said. "He's put on a lot of strength. Everybody says he's weak, but that's not true. I dare somebody to get out there and play him on the court. He's no pushover." The Bears need Wilkes to administer the pushing this season after losing leading rebounder Leon Powe to the Boston Celtics....

The International Cricket Council have confirmed Australian Darrell Hair will not be engaged for any further international matches for the remainder of his Elite Umpires contract, which runs until March 2008. Hair’s position had been the subject of debate since he called Pakistan for ball tampering in the fourth Test against England at the Oval in September, which resulted in the match being forfeited by the tourists. The decision comes after the incident was discussed at the ICC’s two-day board meeting in Mumbai, India, which concluded today. Earlier this week, the world game’s governing body confirmed they had received a letter from the Pakistan Cricket Board urging them to hold an inquiry into Hair’s conduct during the Oval Test. Pakistan were deemed by Hair and colleague Billy Doctrove to have forfeited the match when they refused to return to the field after being penalised five runs for ball-tampering....

Donating to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hair to cancer patients under the age of 18, isn't that rare of a feat. After all, over 2,000 hairpieces have been created since the organization's inception in 1997.What is rare, however, is for someone to donate to Locks of Love - twice - before the age of 8. But that's exactly what 7-year-old Williamstown resident Jenna Johnson did.Jenna is the daughter of Shelli and Matt Johnson and a second-grader in June Bodenhamer's class at Williamstown Elementary. She runs cross-country, takes dance classes and is involved with activities at Williamstown Christian Church. She also has a brother, Christopher, age 9.Shelli said when Jenna was 4-years-old, she attended a birthday party for cancer patient Daniel Gordon. After that, she saw something on TV about Locks of Love."She knew she had a friend with cancer," said Shelli....
