TRIBUNE-REVIEW FILM AND THEATER CRITIC
Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 1:00:09 PM by Blog57 Team
Hollywood and hamlets everywhere must be filled with unemployed screenwriters and filmmakers watching bad movies and muttering, "They game him money to make THAT?" Bill Plympton's adult cartoon feature, "Hair High," an homage to juvenile nastiness, was reviewed by the trade paper Variety in March 2004. It hobbled into one tiny Manhattan theater in October and opens here today. Total North American gross to date: $5,342, according to Boxoffice Mojo. Most of it unfolds as a flashback told by soda-fountain worker Jo Jo (Keith Carradine) to a couple of teenagers. Jo Jo describes how, sometime in the late 1950s or early '60s, nerdy high school newcomer Spud (voiced by Eric Gilliland) won head cheerleader Cherri (Sarah Silverman) from bully-quarterback Rod (Dermot Mulroney), who then went postal at a prom....

Car 19, Where Are You?

The "ghost trains" of Miami's failing Metrorail fascinated author Joan Didion twenty years ago. A "people mover" then in the works was meant to salvage a "mass transit system that did not effectively transport anyone," she wrote in her book Miami. Today Didion would no doubt relish a ride on what we now know as the Metromover. Twenty-nine trams putter amid downtown's towering concrete cadavers like dusty beetles. The little, rubber-wheeled cars look as if they were snatched off the drawing board of a Jetsons illustrator: angled glass windows, sliding floor-to-ceiling doors, and winding track. The small, glassy trains bind Brickell's burgeoning urban luxury to Overtown's nomadic poor, and feed the curious traveler like rotating sushi boats. And like so much else in town, it's a financial disaster....

Sleater-Kinney Cancel European Tour

With the days growing increasingly cooler and ragweed season wrapping up, we figured allergies were over and done with for the year. Well, to assume is to make an ass of u and me, as Sleater-Kinney singer/guitarist Carrie Brownstein's allergies have caused the cancellation of her band's upcoming European tour, which was expected to launch on November 8 in Brighton, England. Brownstein has had two extreme allergic reactions recently, both causing trips to the ER... and not the George Clooney version. A statement on Sleater-Kinney's website explained, "Her doctor has advised that she not travel/tour for prolonged periods of time until the condition stabilizes and further tests are conducted." Uh oh. According to NME.com, Sleater-Kinney are aiming to reschedule the tour dates for Spring 2006 because, as previously reported, they'll be in the UK curating one day of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival....

Concert Review: The Reverend Horton Heat

Having put countless miles on the tour path for nearly 20 years, nine albums under his belt, inclusion on several video game soundtracks and compilations Jim Heath, a.k.a. The Reverend Horton Heat, is one of the hardest working musicians in the business today. With mainstay Jimbo Wallace on the upright bass and former Those Legendary Shack Shakers drummer Paul Simmons, the Rev pulled the tour bus up for a stop at the House of Blues in Cleveland to let loose the band’s signature brand of punk-infused rockabilly to an overwhelmingly appreciative crowd. As the curtain went up The Reverend and crew took to the stage and wasted no time jumping into "Big Sky," the over-drive heavy instrumental that opens their 1994 album Liquor in the Front. Not even stopping to catch their breath, the band followed up with "Baddest of the Bad," setting the tone for the rest of the evening. While undoubtedly the king of Scotty Moore-esque rockabilly guitar, the Reverend is no one trick pony, indeed he’s much more the guitar virtuoso having developed several signature guitar licks....

Perched on the fourth floor of his office with a view of dusty flat land in Gurgaon, a satellite city of Delhi at the heart of India's service economy, Rishi Khosla has come a long way from working as a junior analyst in the Square Mile a decade ago. Mr Khosla is at the forefront of a sophisticated outsourcing trend in India, which is seeing the transfer of many white-collar jobs from the west. He runs Copal Partners, which conducts research for most big banks as well as the management consultants McKinsey. The company has 400 analysts in Gurgaon and its revenues are increasing by 10% a month. ....

Hair raising: Start at roots for volume

C root spray, volume spray, salon spray By Donna Kato -- Big hair is back. Sort of. With 1980s fashion in vogue again, it was only a matter of time before we were fluffing up our 'dos. Not quite Tawny-Kitaen-in-the-Whitesnake-video big, but bigger than the sleek, straight, flat-against-your-head-hair of the last few years. What we want now is volume, but mostly just at the roots. But what magic formula is going to deliver that precise of a hair levitation? We asked three big-hair aficionados to give their locks a lift. FREDERIC FEKKAI -- Instant Volume, root lifting spray, $18.50 for 8 ounces, Sephora (closest location is at the Galleria in St. Louis). Falling flat: "My long, straight Asian hair has layers that lie flat unless I spend time with the curling iron." Give me a lift? "I sprayed my roots and dried my hair with my head upside down -- and held my breath because the scent is pretty potent." Hair-raising ending? "Going from flat to fluffy was an ease! I wonder if there's an unscented version." PHYTO -- Phytovolume Actif, volumizer spray for fine and limp hair, $24 for 3.3 ounces, Sephora....

Voting Doesn't Matter
Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 11:23:17 AM by Blog57 Team
There is a bumper sticker that says "Don't vote, in only encourages them." I know a lot of people who don't vote because they've become totally disillusioned by the rhetoric, partisanship and relentless demonizing that passes for politics these days. I wish I could say I blame them. It's a sad commentary on American democracy that elections have been reduced to picking "the lesser of two evils." Wouldn't it be nice to vote for candidates you could actually believe in? Some people love to preach about all the freedom of choice we enjoy in this country. These people need to seriously raise their standards. One day every couple years we get to make a single choice between two walking hair-dos in expensive suits. There are only two political parties that control virtually every aspect of government....
